MacBook Pro M3 v/s M2 Chips Comparison

Both M3 Pro and M2 Pro come with 12 CPU cores, but how these cores are set up is different. The M3 Pro has 6 high-performance cores and 6 smaller efficiency cores, and the M2 Pro has 8 powerful cores and 4 efficiency cores, which has surely helped Apple save on some technical resources.

When it comes to the graphics side, the M3 Pro’s GPU has decreased to 18, whereas the M3 Max’s has increased to 40, and the standard M3 chip is at 10 only. The memory bandwidth has also decreased to 150GB/s, but you can see an increase in memory capacity to 18GB and 36GB options.

When comparing performance, the M3 Pro’s GPU shows quite an improvement than its previous versions. The M3 Pro’s GPU is now available with various cool new features, like hardware-accelerated ray tracing and the ability to decode AV1 video streams. If you’re someone who needs to connect more than one external display directly to your Mac, you’ll need the M3 Pro, as the regular M3 won’t support this.

So, while these changes might not be super obvious on charts, they do bring some interesting upgrades and differences between the M3 Pro and its predecessor.

MacBook Pro M3 Features

  • Display

The 14-inch MacBook Pro M3 comes with a cool 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display that packs 3024 x 1964 pixels. What’s even better? The brightness got a boost! Regular stuff (SDR content) now shines at 600 nits, which is 20% brighter than the previous version.

And guess what, if you’re into HDR content, this MacBook Pro M3 display is a champ. It’s rated for 1,000 nits of steady brightness and can hit a whopping 1,600 nits at its peak. That’s some serious screen power for your viewing pleasure!

  • Design and Ports

There’s not much change in the design of the newest MacBook Pro M3, so you’ll be getting the same aluminium body laptop that you can easily open up. The laptop is available in a new Space Gray colour and the classic Silver shade. You can even choose the newest and most refreshing Space Black colour, but it’s a bit more expensive than the rest.

For ports, there are 3 Thunderbolt 4 ports, one HDMI, and a full-size SD Card slot, along with a 3.5mm headphone jack. You even get a MagSafe port to charge your laptop quickly. The MacBook Pro M3 only supports one external monitor at a time, but if you need two screen options together, it’s best to go for the MacBook Pro M3 model.

  • Performance

If you want to experience real power and lifelike graphics, the new MacBook Pro 14-inch with the M3 chip is undoubtedly a game-changer. This tiny 3-nanometer chip offers an amazing 60% increase in speed as compared to the previous versions.

One standout feature of the M3 chip is its advanced GPU, introducing Dynamic Caching technology. This nifty addition allows the GPU to dynamically allocate local memory in real-time using hardware, rather than relying on software. The end result? Better GPU performance in professional applications and games.

For gaming lovers, the M3 GPU provides the support of hardware-accelerated mesh shading which makes it so much more efficient than before. Also, the laptop comes with the newest ray tracing feature to offer better lighting and picture quality to give you a lifelike gaming experience.

In terms of practical use, Apple claims that tasks like rendering in Final Cut Pro are a whopping 60% faster on the M3 chip compared to the 13-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 chip. And if you’re dealing with spreadsheets, the M3 chip can handle them up to 40% faster.

  • Battery Life

The most amazing feature that the MacBook Pro M3 models have gotten is the long-lasting battery life. The older M2 version only lasts for around 12 hours while browsing the internet and somewhere around 18 hours if you are watching movies. But, now, the M3 model is claiming an impressive 22 hours of battery life. However, it’s still not being tested to know whether the battery will actually stand for almost an entire day or not.

  • Outlook

The new MacBook Pro M3 seems like a great choice with its more powerful chip, brighter display, and more affordable price tag in the UK. The claimed battery life of up to 22 hours is definitely a strong point. But, everyone is excited about its improved graphics performance, however, the response is still not out yet on it. So, you have to wait a bit more for the user’s response.

There is surely a downside of the laptop being noticeably priced high at £1,299 compared to its older models. But, at that extra price, you get to enjoy various new features like a larger and more vibrant display, a higher-quality 1080p webcam, and so many additional ports. Overall, the MacBook Pro M3 is surely justified by the higher price because of these added features.

  • MacBook Pro M3I I/O

The M3 Pro and Max MacBook Pro laptops have the same ports and layout as the M1 and M2 Pro and Max MacBook Pro. This includes an HDMI port, SDXC card reader, and MagSafe. They also have three Thunderbolt 4/USB-C 4 ports. However, the M3 MacBook Pro now has one less Thunderbolt 4 port.

And, just like the M2 Pro and M2 Max, the M3 Pro and M3 Max chips offer amazing external display support that M1 didn’t have. You can find the upgraded HDMI 2.1 port that now supports up to 8K output at 60Hz and allows you to enable the multichannel audio output. Additionally, two more improvements are WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the MacBook Pro 3, including the M3 Pro and M3 Max models, maintains the familiar and robust port layout seen in its predecessors. While the M3 MacBook Pro differs by having one less Thunderbolt 4 port, it compensates with advancements in external display support, upgrading from HDMI 2.0 to 2.1 for impressive 8K output at 60Hz and multichannel audio. Noteworthy enhancements like WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 further contribute to the overall performance and connectivity of the MacBook Pro 3, making it a compelling choice for users seeking a powerful and versatile laptop.
